Hard Court Maintenance

Do’s

• Keep court free of foreign matter, clean your court frequently – to remove sand, leaves, dirt, debris, moss, mold and mildew. To remove stubborn mold/mildew, an experienced contractor should utilize a high pressure power washer, without damaging the color surface.
• Use the right equipment, soft nylon or hair-type broom for sweeping and scrubbing<.
• Beware of water, bird baths or standing water, repair as required.
• Clean and fill cracks, repair as required.
• Plan for resurfacing every 5-8 years.

Don’ts

• Do not drag heavy objects across surface.
• Do not drive maintenance equipment onto court with protecting the surface.
• Marking soles on athletic footwear.
• Place pads under equipment with sharp edges.
• No in-line hockey play (on tennis and basketball courts), rollerblades, bicycles, or skateboards, these will cause damage to the acrylic surface.

How We Can Help Repair Your Hard Court

POWERWASHING

The surface may have areas that are showing signs of algae, mold, and mildew. This most often occurs in damp, low traffic shaded areas were trees are overhanging on the court. Algae growth can also occur in low areas where there is standing water for long periods of time. This algae, mold and/or mildew can be cleaned using a high pressure power washer. All debris and stains, including leaves, grass, tree sap, fruit, and bird droppings should be removed as soon as possible, to prevent discoloration, staining, and possibly peeling of the acrylic color surface.

CRACK REPAIR

Depending on the type of cracks occurring in your courts, there are different methods of crack repair, the most common being acrylic crack filler. Although this method is inexpensive, there is no guarantee how long before the cracks will reappear as hairline cracks. In recent years, fabric repair systems have made significant growth in the industry. This repair utilizes a knitted fabric that will expand and contract with the crack hidden beneath the repair to successfully keep the structural cracks from reappearing on the surface. LOW AREAS

These areas are often called “birdbaths”, and as defined by the American Sports Builders Association, it is any area where standing water more than 1/16” (commonly measured using a nickel) deep remains after drainage of the area has ceased or after 1 hour of drying at 70°F in sunlight. These areas delay play after rain and may cause staining and/or peeling if the color surface. They are most commonly repaired with an acrylic patch mix. Plexipave Court Patch Binder

ACRYLIC COATING

Recoloring or resurfacing is the process of applying the color acrylic coating over the entire surface of your court. How often and the number of coats depends on a number of variables. On average, it is recommended that your courts be resurfaced every 5-8 years depending on the usage and environmental exposure. The number of coats applied is usually a minimum of 2-3 coats for the standard color system and could be 7-9 coats on a premium cushioned system. Read more about the Plexipave System
